About
Grand Prairie ISD's Veterinary Studies Program
Warrior Paws Grooming Salon and Clinic is an extension of the Veterinary Technician Studies Pathway at SGPHS. Students participating in Warrior Paws are sophomores, juniors, and seniors in the program that are currently working to complete hands-on training requirements to become Certified Veterinary Assistants through TVMA. We are branching out to offer grooming services to help students have more contact with animals and to afford them the opportunity to practice skills such as animal handling, animal restraint, taking vital signs and health scores, veterinary laboratory tests and procedures, patient sample collection, physical examinations, clinic and hospital flow/procedures, as well as learning the trade of pet grooming.
We are currently offering grooming services, veterinary assistant exams, and other limited services.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What days is Warrior Paws open?
We are currently taking appointments on Tuesday through Thursday. Drop off is 7am to 9 am. Pick up is before 2:15 or after 3:15pm. - Do I need to bring anything with my pet? Food? Blankets?
You can bring personal items, but please label them in some way. If your pet requires food during the day, you are welcome to drop off a small lunch or snack with your pet in the morning. - Will my pet be stuck in a kennel all day?
All dogs here for any service will be taken out to be walked and played with a minimum of 2 times during the school day. Dogs are checked frequently and provided towels and water in their kennels.
Pets such as cats are sometimes more comfortable being left alone after being groomed, and may only be taken out of their kennel for requested services. Litter boxes, water, and towels will be in their kennels at all times. If the cat or rabbit is social, we will interact with it during the day. - How will my pet be handled?
All services rendered will be approved by the owner prior to dropping your pet off. All pets will be examined and given a health check by one of our vet assisting students before grooming. All restraint is consistent within industry guidelines. Students receive instruction and supervision during the day. Restraint is generally in the form of a bear hug to keep the pet still and safe throughout the exam and bathing. All procedures are recorded in the pet's file for record keeping. - What if my pet stresses out?
As a learning clinic, we prefer pets that are known to be well behaved and generally friendly. We also understand that all pets have good days and bad days and can react differently in new and different environments. Any pets that prove to be aggressive, appear to need sedation for grooming, or show extreme aggression may be declined services. If pets show signs of distress, grooming services will be stopped.
