HISTORY of Read Across the Prairie

On September 7th, 2005, Grand Prairie ISD launched the Read Across the Prairie Reading Initiative.
In the first 2 weeks, over 25,000 students and staff pledged to join the GPISD Community of Readers.
This meant pledging to read every day " just for the fun of it".

During that 2005-2006 school year, each school library created their own Read Across the Prairie Rocking Chair. All of the chairs visited the District Education Center, a school board meeting, and the District sponsored Title I Parent Conference.
All students and teachers who signed a pledge card received a black and white Read Across the Prairie ID wristband. Black and white bookmarks were also available in January. In the spring, black t-shirts with the white Read Across the Prairie logo were available to purchase. The year ended with the entire district - from 1st grade to top administration to busy bus drivers stopping to spend time reading for fun - all at the same time.

To start off the 2006-2007 Read Across the Prairie school year, a new proclamation was read and signed by the new GPISD School Board, the City of Grand Prairie came on board with its own Proclamation signed by the mayor, and the librarians even travelled to Austin where a resolution was entered on the House floor by State Representative Kirk England to recognize the dedication of the GPISD to creating lifelong readers in their city. Readers who signed a new pledge card received a RAP logo 'dog tag' key chain. Even more RAP shirts have been purchased as more and more people join our community of readers.
